Car Seat Safety – What You Don’t Know

Car seats can often be found nestled in the aisles between the stuffed animals and strollers, but they are far from being a simple choice. These serious and often complex pieces of equipment require research. Find out before you buy how compatible they are with your mode of transportation. Not all best infant car seats suit all cars, or all children for that matter.

Peg perego infant car seat

You probably know about the importance of infant car seats. You probably also know they need to be positioned in the rear facing position. But did you know that you need a transitional seat between the infant carrier model and the convertible seat facing forward? It’s true. Once an infant outgrows their first car seat, typically between 20 and 22 pounds and 26- to 27 inches, they can be moved to a convertible seat, facing toward the rear still.

This is the first of 5 tips to ensure the safety of a child in a car seat:

Tip 1. Do Not Rush to Turn the Car Seat Forward.

The longer your baby stays facing toward the rear, the better chance his spine will be supported in the event of a collision. There is no such thing as a minor fender bender when there is an infant in the car.

The general rule is that the baby should be one year and 20 pounds at the absolute bare minimum. It is recommended that no child be turned to face forward under one years of age, regardless of their weight.

Tip 2. Avoid Car Seat Accessories.

The numerous toys and tightening devices on the market should not be attached to the car seat. These after market accessories have not been tested or held to the same standards as the car seats themselves.

Specifically, tightening devices are gadgets that are intended to take up slack in the seat belt. The possibility of these detaching and becoming a dangerous projectile in the case of a crash are high and so, should not be used.

Toy bars that did not come with the car seat should be avoided as well. The area in front of a child should be clear of potential hazards. The same can be said for comfort products that attach to the harness straps. The problem with these lies in the fact that the padding can make it hard to know how effective the straps are in the event of an accident or even short stop. The padding can negate a seat’s performance.

Tip 3. Use Recommended Products.

Surprisingly the recommended products for making the ride more comfortable for your baby are inexpensive and commonsense items rather than pricey accessories. These include a rolled up receiving blanket placed alongside an infant to keep them snugly in place. Blankets or towels can also be placed around an infant’s floppy head to give them extra support. Short lengths of pool noodles can also be used in place of a rolled piece of fabric. The advantage to using these foam rolls is that they can be custom cut to fit and are simple to rinse off and replace as needed.

Tip 4. Walk Away from Used Car Seats.

Secondhand car seats are not a good idea. If car seat safety is important to you, then purchase an up to date model. Give your child the best possible shot at a safe car trip with up-to-date protection. If it is a financially difficult to purchase a new car seat, ask at the hospital if there are any programs in place that supply car seats, they can put you in touch with a charitable organization, or may be a provider themselves.

Tip 5. Locate a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician.

Schedule an appointment. Be aware that there is often a waiting list, so sign up early if expecting your first child and want to be sure the seat is placed properly. If there is not a technician in your area, visit the Safety Belt Safe USA website for more helpful tips, including recall information and proper installation.

Infant Car Seat – What to Look For

Infant Car Seat - What to Look ForWhen looking for a new car seat for your baby, you will want to look for certain features. You’ll use an infant car seat for at least the first year of your baby’s life. It’s important to choose the right seat.

How does the infant car seat harness tighten?

You will want to be able to easily adjust the harness on the car seat. It should fit snugly, so that you can fit a finger between your infant and the harness, but no more. You’ll want to be able to adjust the harness as baby grows, and as seasons change and clothes become either lighter or bulkier. You may want to try using a baby sized stuffed animal buckled in to see if you have trouble adjusting the harness with a baby in the car seat.

Are the buckles on the infant car seat too difficult to remove?

You don’t want to struggle to unbuckle your baby. You also don’t want the buckle to be too easy to remove. Your baby will eventually be curious enough to try taking off the seat belt. Try buckling and unbuckling the infant seat before you buy it. Some of the upper clips on the five point harness are difficult and frustrating to remove.

Is the size of the infant car seat compatible with my car?

Some car seats are bigger than others and will take up more room in your vehicle. Also, some smaller cars may make safely fitting a car seat difficult. Also pay attention to how the back seat of your car is shaped. If your back seat slants back too much, you will need to use a piece of a pool noodle or a rolled up towel to install your infant seat at the correct angle. There should be a line clearly marked on the infant seat that tells you the correct angle. Note that using a towel is not recommended by this mother as the towel tends to compress over time, while a pool noodle can be cut to size and will not compress.

Is the car seat easy to carry?

You’ll be carrying your baby in the car seat often, so you’ll want to be sure you can easily carry the seat with up to 20 pounds of weight. Check to see if the handle of the seat fits your hand comfortably. If the handle feels at all awkward, you may want to look at other infant seats.

How does it fasten into the car?

Most car seats are designed with a LATCH system that will work in cars newer than 2001. The latch system can be confusing to install the first time, so it is best to have someone show you how to install your car seat into your car. Call your local fire department for help finding assistance to inspect your car seat installation.

If you have an older car, will you be able to safely fasten the car seat without the latch system?

A car seat installed with the seat belt can be as safe as one installed with the LATCH system. According to Car-Safety.org the LATCH system is not safer than a seat that is properly installed using only the seat belt. The LATCH system is intended to make it easier to correctly install your infant car seat.

Evenflo – Discovery 5 Infant Car Seat Reviews

Evenflo - Discovery 5 Infant Car Seat ReviewsAs parents we are always concerned about the safety of our children, especially newborns being welcomed into the world. With a full line of products to enhance our living experience with a newborn, we are faced with many decisions as to what types of products to buy, what are the safety ratings and their practicability.

When it comes to car seats, you want to get something that is not only fitting to your car seating arrangement, but comfortable for baby as well. There are many different makes and models to choose from and at times it can be very difficult to figure which best suits you. Each one offers written “quality and safety” features on the box however labeling may not always read true.

I am personally a fan of Graco’s line of products, however prior to owning anything from them, I was probably like you, in the local shopping center looking for a car seat while the wife was in the hospital, a few hours before, awaiting her delivery. Price was a concern at the time, which after reading this, I hope you will reconsider prices before purchasing a car seat.

I purchased an Even Flo – Discovery 5 Infant Car Seat, in the Pink Pearls color, which I thought was very cute, since we were going to have a baby girl. This was a huge mistake. I took cheap price and “cuteness” and let my impulsiveness overrun my decision making. This car seat sells for a little under sixty dollar at Wal-Mart, where I purchased it.

The car seat was easy to install. That much credit I will give it. That and the fact it had a Z shaped handle which made it easier to tote our baby girl around. The bad part about the car seat is it’s failures to do what it was meant to do. Restrain and Infant in the instance of an automobile accident.

My family and I were heading out for dinner on a Thursday evening when a Toyota pickup truck smashed into us while we were sitting still at a red light. It was a rear end collision and the damage was pretty extensive, which totaled our Ford Taurus. After my wife and I came back to our senses, we could hear our baby girl crying in terror. We jumped out of the vehicle and to my amazement, our sons Graco made car seat held our son in very securely, however, our baby girl had ejected from her car seat which was the Even Flo.

Once the Fire Chief arrived on scene with the paramedics, he looked at our car seat as he could not believe that she had ejected from her car seat. It just did not seem feasible. After examining it, he stated very clearly and sternly that this was not an infant car seat and that if Even Flo said it were, it was not built properly to safely restrain an infant. He seemed very upset that this was a so called “infant” car seat. He went on further to say that it was possibly decent for an eight or nine month old, but not an infant.

Upon further inspection it was deemed that the rear hidden straps behind the frame of the car seat had given out due to the force of the impact of the Toyota. The straps were supposed to naturally lock and restrain, however they did not, and as soon as impact occurred, the straps let go, as our baby’s body lunged forward.

Ladies and Gentleman, please, for the safety of your newborns, infants or four month old babies, do not purchase any car seat because it may be cheap, pretty or easier to tote. These features are nice, but are not worth the safety concerns that may arise in a real world accident, not documented in a testing lab.

Product Review: Combi Centre DX – Infant Car Seat

Product Review: Combi Centre DX - Infant Car SeatThe Combi Centre DX is a car seat is an infant carrier/base car seat system. It is rear-facing with a 5-point harness and is for children five to 22 pounds and under 29 inches.

The Combi Centre DX is one of the newer car seats from Combi. It includes an easy to install base with a narrow profile so you can use it next to other car seats. The handle even stays up in the car, which makes it very convenient.

Features

The Combi Centre DX car seat and base can both be installed with just seatbelts. The car seat does not offer latch installation, but can be installed with the seatbelts if you don’t have the base. The base is pretty standard when compared to other infant car seats. What it does have is a unique built-in locking clip to help with installation. It should be compatible with most seatbelts.

Compared to other infant car seats the base is narrow. This helps if you want to have the car seat in the center or if you need to install multiple car seats at the same time. The Combi Centre DX has an adjustable ‘foot’ that allows four recline positions. The car seat’s integrated locking clip is in the belt path and is used for both Latch and seatbelt installations.

The car seat also has a five-point harness. This type of harness is recommended by child passenger safety advocates. It will offer the best fit and most protection from ejection. This car seat should work great for newborns as the lowest harness height is around 6.5 inches when using the infant insert. The pads on the harness are nice and can be removed.

A rear facing car seat is the safest way for a small child to travel. The Combi Centre DX has a 22 pound limit so most babies should have no problem fitting into the car seat in the rear facing position. This car seat also has an easy to access release mechanism. The handle is also very comfortable for holding the car seat and it is also fairly light weight.

The Combi Centre DX is also pretty stylish for a car seat and has grey patterned fabric with lime green trip. Another great thing about this car seat is that it is designed to be used with many Combi stroller models.

The Verdict

Overall the Combi Centre DX is a very nice infant car seat. It has features you won’t find on most car seat models. It seems to be very safe and installs easily. While no product is perfect I have to give the Combi Centre DX my highest recommendation.

A Graco SnugRide Infant Car Seat Full of Features

A Graco SnugRide Infant Car Seat Full of FeaturesI was very dissatisfied with my first infant car seat (which was later recalled) so when I was expecting my second child I searched for an infant car seat with extra features. I found that many other moms online really liked the Graco SnugRide and so I went to my local baby store and checked it out.

At first glance, the Graco SnugRide was a beautiful seat. However, I was more concerned about its safety ratngs as well as features that would make it easy to use and install. The Graco SnugRide is a top-rated infant seat. It has a five-point harness with a secure chest-clip. In order to allow for growth of the baby and for a secure harness fit with varying clothes thicknesses, the Graco SnugRide has a front strap adjustable harness that uses a push button and is easy to operate. (To make sure your child isn’t wearing clothing that is too thick to be safe in a car seat refer to this article: http://babyproducts.about.com/od/carseats/a/carseatcoat.htm)

For the baby’s comfort, the Graco SnugRide has added foam beneath the car seat cover. Another comfort feature is the head support that matches the design of the car seat and keeps baby’s head from rolling to one side or the other. Some Graco SnugRide models come with a ‘cold weather boot’ that fits over the end of the of the car seat keeping cold air from entering and helping blankets to stay tucked around baby’s feet. Living in the South East I didn’t have much use for the cold weather boot for warmth, but found that I could slip my wallet or keys or grocery list under it when I went into the store with baby. (Never leave loose items in the car seat while traveling as they could become projectiles in an accident.)

The Graco SnugRide comes with the Latch System but is easy to install with a seat belt, also. The car seat is easy to remove from the base and a definite “click” signals that the car seat has been put into the base properly when putting baby in the car. The easy to use base makes it simple for the car seat to go from car to stroller.

Carrying the car seat once baby reaches a certain weight is always difficult, but the Graco SnugRide makes it easier with its ergonomic handle. I also find that propping the car seat on my hip while carrying it is made easier by the design of the seat.

The Graco SnugRide goes past the typical 20-pound rear-facing weight limit to 22 pounds which allows baby to ride rear-facing in an ultra-protective infant a little longer before having to move to a convertible seat.

I would recommend the Graco Snugride to parents looking for a reasonably priced; feature packed; rated high for safety; excellent infant car seat.

Product Review: Baby Trend Flex Loc Infant Car Seat

Product Review: Baby Trend Flex Loc Infant Car SeatAny parent with an infant knows that purchasing a car seat for your baby can be a daunting task. There are tons of different car seat manufacturers, different styles and types, and different views on which seat is best for baby.

Over the years, I’ve purchased approximately 10 different car seats from various different manufacturers. I can easily say that the Baby Trend Flex Loc Infant car seat is one of the best I’ve tried. The car seat is very durable and sturdy. The seat comes in a variety of color patterns so you can choose one that fits your needs. I chose the Jet Black fabric because I thought it would easier to keep clean.

One of the best features of this car seat is the triangle shaped handle. The shape of the carrying handle allows you to have greater control and flexibility when carrying your baby in the car seat. You can grab the handle from virtually any angle, which is very convenient. This is a much needed improvement from the normal straight across handle that most infant seats use.

A major safety feature included is the use of EPS foam in the head area of the seat. This provides extra padding and protection to the baby’s head in the event of an accident. This padding protection exceeds federal standards. According to Baby Trend’s website, this car seat is the #1 rated infant car seat. When I saw that award, it made the decision to buy this seat very easy.

The seat also comes with a feature known as a height adjustable seat back with no harness rethreading. This allows you to loosen or tighten the straps by turning a knob on the back of the car seat. This is much easier to adjust than with other seats I’ve used in the past. And, the button to release the seat from the base can be pressed with one hand, making it much easier to get your child in and out of the car. The base is very easy to install in the car, and can easily be properly installed in less than 5 minutes. It simply snaps into place using your vehicle’s LATCH restraint system. This seat base was by far the easiest we’ve ever installed. That makes it much more convenient if you are constantly taking your car seat base in and out of the car. Since some parents switch cars with each other, this easy to install and uninstall car seat base allows you to just swap out the car seat from one car to another without having to purchase an additional base. That will save you money since the base for this car seat will cost approximately $35-$45 depending on what retailer you purchase from.

There are only two drawbacks to this car seat that I’ve found. The first is that the handle can be stiff and hard to move up and down at times. It’s not impossible to do, but I suppose that if you weren’t a strong person, or if you had arthritis, you probably wouldn’t be able to move the handle up and down. To me, this is only a minor inconvenience, however, because I rarely lower the handle. I can easily put my baby in and take him out of the seat without even having to touch the handle, so I frequently skip lowering the handle anyway to save myself time.

The other drawback to this seat is that it is quite heavy. The manufacturer’s website lists the seat as weighing only 9.65 pounds without the base, which is another 6 pounds. However, I think that is wrong. I’ve weighed the car seat at home and found it to weigh approximately 12 pounds without the base attached. Now, 12 pounds doesn’t sound like a lot of weight, but when you add in a 20 pound baby, that means you’re carrying 32 pounds of weight, which can be terribly difficult, especially if you have other children like I do. The manufacturer says the seat can be used with children in a weight range of 5 and 30 pounds and up to a height of 30 inches. With a 30 pound child in this seat, I feel it would be nearly impossible to carry for any distance greater than a few feet.

Other than those two drawbacks I described, I think that this seat is a top quality product. If you are in the market for an infant car seat, the Baby Trend Flex Loc car seat is one of the best, and it is priced low enough to not break the bank. This car seat is available at Target, Babies R Us, Amazon.com and other fine retailers for approximately $89-$119 depending on the retailer it’s purchased from.

Slings for Babies vs. Infant Car Seat Carriers

Health, Safety, Comfort and Infant Bonding

Slings for Babies vs. Infant Car Seat CarriersWhen our first child was born, we tried both an infant front pack carrier and the detachable infant car seat carrier. After about two uses, it was evident for many reasons, that the front pack carrier or baby sling as we later used was a far superior method of carrying baby. Better for bonding with baby, safer and healthier for baby, more comfortable for baby and far easier on our backs, my husband and I loved our sling and front pack carrier.

It’s really only common sense that the plastic infant car seat carriers are a nightmare for everyone. We call them baby crates, just as dogs have crate cages. Only dogs are more fortunate than infants in their crate construction. At least dogs can move freely. The poor little car seat carried baby is strapped in and held immobile against a rigid plastic shell. Before baby is able to hold her head erect, it lolls to the side and must be mercilessly uncomfortable. Baby can’t stretch her legs or arms and must lay in a mushed up hunch that is terribly deforming to growing bones and muscles.

The car seat carrier is heavy, unwieldy and dangerous. How easy would it be for a kidnapper to pick up a baby carrier while the parent’s back is turned, and walk off with the child? No one questions seeing anyone carrying an infant carrier through a store or public area. Also, an infant weighs about 10-20 pounds, sans carrier. With carrier, the total weight can be 30-50 pounds.

Babies who are carried in slings or front packs, however, can wiggle, stretch and arrange themselves comfortably. Our babies loved being carried in their slings and front packs. My husband and I used to call it ‘wearing the baby’. They slept like logs against our chests. With baby’s head nestled right close to me I could keep them close and safe. The sling makes an excellent little nest for baby to nurse and snuggle. Once in awhile someone would inquire if the baby was comfortable. Looking at our snoozing baby, warm and cozy on against my breast, I’d say, ‘well he certainly looks comfortable, doesn’t he?’ How often have you heard miserable little babies screaming in their infant car seat carriers? Do you know that with our four children, I can’t recall a single crying incident? Mostly they just dozed contentedly.
